Carnegie Mellon Racing
I stepped into the world of motor vehicles as a college freshman with no prior knowledge, only to discover a whole new realm of design opportunities. As part of CMR, I led a team of eight designers in shaping the team’s identity and branding, ensuring we stand out in competition.
Role: Design Captain
Skills: Graphic Design, Livery Design, Brand Identity
Tools: Adobe Photoshop, Figma, Keyshot
Collaborators: Brandt Li, Russell Sang
Timeline: Spring 2023
For the first time in CMR’s history, we designed a white car to stand out from the competition. Our design combines a fluid “flow” pattern that emphasizes the car’s curvature with a top-view linear plaid inspired by Carnegie Mellon’s iconic tartan. This contrast between organic and structured elements creates a visually striking and uniquely recognizable identity. The result? A car unlike any other. 23E went on to place second at Formula Hybrid and was the fastest student-built electric car in America in 2023.
USAGE
The biggest project the design team tackles is the car’s livery design. It must accurately represent the team’s brand and highlight the car’s main features all while being creative and unlike any other school. In a small group of three, we created the team’s 2023 car “23E”’s livery design.
